Have a look at your syslog configuration... /etc/syslog.conf
e.g.
*.err;kern.debug;auth.notice;mail.crit /dev/console
Dont forget that if you make changes to this file to do a
kill -1 to the syslog.pid (contained in /var/run/syslog.pid)
